Last week I went with my garden club “Bouquettes” on a road trip to visit Brookwood Community, and as often happens here in Texas, in the middle of nowhere you find yourself in an oasis of tranquility, good food and exceptional plants. The operations manager Javier Mar gave us a talk about how they raise the plants for sale, irrigation, care, fertilization, transplanting and pruning they require. Super interesting.
The particularity of this place is that it is a home for people with disabilities, few places provide care in adulthood and residents here are an integral part of everyday life of the community. They help with transplanting, pruning and watering plants. They serve at the restaurant, etc.. And all profits from the shop, restaurant and selling of flowers goes to cover the costs of residents who do not have a family to pay for them. Really, a fantastic initiative.
Regarding plants, they specialize in premium flowers having more than 800 different kind of plants and for some 2-3 varieties or colors. It is a wonder. I loved it. For Houstonians, is very close to Katy and really worth to go to buy flowers, gifts (they have a lovely gift shop) and for lunch.
